It has emerged that the General Secretary hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Charles Onuawonto Bissue has prepared to officii file his nomination forms in the coming week, which will give him a legal backing and to contest the position of the NPP General Secretary.
This was disclosed to the journalists on Thursday, June 9, 2022, after the scores of delegates of the NPP e headquarters of the party purchased the nomination forms to secure the latter’s bid for the General Secretaryship.
The nomination forms of Mr. Bissue were picked by the delegates and leadership of the campaign team of Mr. Bissue in the persons of Mr. Justice Yussif, Mr. Courage Hope Goldberg-Grimm Lekettey, and Barnabas Annan.
This development has attested to the fact that the delegates have massively endorsed him to win the NPP General Secretary slot to manage the party effectively to improve upon its electoral fortunes.
Speaking in an interview with journalists, Mr. Bissue thanked the delegates, members, and supporters of the NPP for their support and categorically stated that it was about time delegates elected a new breed of politicians within the NPP capable of breaking the eight in the 2024 general election.
He said the party’s accomplishment over the last years was massive and “that it would be able to retain political power in 2024….with the right crop of leadership.”
Against this backdrop, Mr. Bissue repeated his call to delegates and members of the party to vote massively for him to win the General Secretary position to help “repair the broken structures and foundations” of the party across the country.
He said his decision to contest the race was informed by numerous calls on him from the rank and file of the party to serve in that role.
He stressed that his vast experience in party politics had attested to the fact that he was more capable or qualified to be elected the new NPP General Secretary to help the party win the 2024 poll.
According to him, the party has great potential of retaining political power in 2024 should delegates make the right decision about its leadership.
He noted that the quest to "breaking the 8'' cannot be achieved if the same old "tactics" were employed.
He noted that political elections were more of a science and required proven strategies and management.
"This I demonstrated in the Western Region in 2016. As a Regional Secretary and with the support of my executives across the region and constituencies, we overturned the margins of the party in 2016,” he stated.
He pointed out that with his experience as a two-term Western Regional Secretary of the NPP he was better positioned to lead the party into victory come 2024.
According to him, the most functional units of the party were the regional and constituency executives, adding that the general secretary role was no different from his role in the Western Region.
"I want to state on records that having been elected for two consecutive terms as Western Regional Secretary, l have unbreakable parliamentary seats winning records which have been the highest since the existence of the NPP in the Western Region. So lam going to bring on board such agenda and policies to the national level if I am elected the General Secretary of the NPP," he stressed.
"I  also have unprecedented records…where in the Western Region we had one of the highest parliamentary margins in the history of the party with me as the Regional Secretary. So if l am coming to the national level you can imagine the results which would come if given the nod.
"Let me use this medium to state categorically that there is nothing like I am the most experienced candidate. I have been there for a long. Whatever one has was fed to me by the various executives at the regional, constituency, and polling stations…and one of those actors is l Charles Bissue, and this time l l am coming and will do it better," he noted.
Additionally, Mr. Bissue asserted that though the NPP in its current state was efficient, it was not effective enough to retain political power in 2024 and beyond.
“NPP is efficient now but it’s not effective. Being efficient is not enough for me. It needs to be effective,” he said.
According to him, this calls for new and versatile leaders to drive the needed change the party so desired.
“The party needs a breadth of fresh air… wants to break the eight, and the government had done well. We have a good message, but we need to change the messengers,” he stressed.
Mr. Bissue assured of an “inclusive and sustainable collaboration between the party and the government if given the nod to be elected the new General Secretary of the NPP.
