Cohabitation In Central Region And Needs To Be Addressed-Central Regional Director of Gender
Central Regional Director of the Department of Gender, Mama Awotsu Adzagba II, has announced that the recent adolescent pregnancy data collected for the year 2021, revealed that a child below the age of 10 years was pregnant in the region.
She mentioned children below the age of 18 years could have two or three children and this is as a result of either "cohabitation relationship or child marriage, hence, cohabitation is common in the region.
Mama Adzagba made this known at a sensitization programme for boys, girls and men in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem and Ekumfi District, all in the Central Region. It was organized in collaboration with UNFPA and the central regional coordinating council.
She observed that the department of gender has had an extensive communication with the boys on child marriage, saying children below 18 years who are being given into marriage is prevalent in the central region and parents agree to give their girl child below the age of 18 years to marriages because of teenage pregnancy and some of these marriages are informal.
She revealed the department is trying to engage the men and the boys through education on the position of the law on child marriage.
She indicated that many people do not know the meaning of defilement "which means they have  no idea about what they're involving themselves in.
Mama Adzagba urged parents to be  watchful of their children and they must know that the law will take action against any boy child who commit such an offence if he is 12 years old.
