The Chief of Suhyen who also doubled as Mponuahene of New Juaben Traditional Area in the Eastern Region is reported dead following surgery in one of the hospitals in Accra.

Okogyeaman Ankomah Basapong died a week ago while undergoing surgery at a hospital in Accra.

The death of Suhyene came as a shock especially when he was expected to observe Akwasidae last Sunday and engage the media on some local issues due to his affiliation with the media fraternity in the region.

Information gathered indicate that the death of the chief is yet to be officially announced to the public, but the stool in the palace has since been turned outside down, which customary means the passing away of the chief.

Okogyeaman Ankomah Basapong ascended the Suhyen stool in 2010 and has since been entangled with a chieftaincy dispute by a rival faction of Nana Acheamfuor Baah, his predecessor who abdicated the stool to seek greener pastures but returned several years later and attempted to reclaim the stool.

The chieftaincy dispute in Suhyen between the two factions led to many bloody clashes in the traditional area.

Okogyeaman Ankomah Basapong worked as an accountant at Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

Politically, he would be remembered for his endorsement of former president John Dramani Mahama when seeking reelection in 2016 which stoked controversy.
