Chidimma Adetshina wins Miss Universe Nigeria following rejection in South Africa
Chidimma Adetshina, who was forced to withdraw from the Miss South Africa contest owing to nationality-based persecution, has been crowned Nigeria's beauty queen.
Ms Adetshina was filled with pleasure and emotions when she was named Miss Universe Nigeria on Saturday, August 31. "This crown is more than just a symbol of beauty; it also represents unification.
"I am very proud and grateful to be representing Nigeria at Miss Universe, and I am confident that we will win," said the 23-year-old law student.
She was invited to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria after withdrawing from the Miss South Africa contest over a nationality issue.Adetshina will represent Nigeria in the global Miss Universe competition in Mexico in November.
Some South Africans questioned Ms Adetshina's ability to compete in the beauty contest since, despite being a South African citizen, her father is Nigerian and her mother had Mozambican ancestry.
In interviews, Ms Adetshina stated that she was born in Soweto, a South African township near Johannesburg, and grew up in Cape Town.
The controversy surrounding her nationality prompted an investigation, with Miss South Africa organisers requesting that the country's home affairs agency investigate into her eligibility.
Following an initial investigation, the agency announced that Miss Adetshina's mother may have committed "identity theft" to get South African citizenship.
