Edinson Cavani has apologized for his Instagram reply to a friend which was later explained as offensive.

The Uruguayan came from the bench to score two goals which helped the Red Devils claim a dramatic 3-2 win at the Saint Mary’s on Sunday afternoon.

The 33-year old replying to a congratulatory message on Instagram after the game wrote in Spanish, “Gracias negrito’ which is translated as thank you, little Black one.

Although the phrase is an affectionate term of endearment in South America, but cold in other parts of the world since the meaning can be misconstrued for something else.

The player being prompted quickly deleted the post and apologized for his actions.

“The message I posted after the game on Sunday was intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for his congratulations after the game.

“The last thing I wanted to do was cause offence to anyone. I am completely opposed to racism and deleted the message as soon as it was explained that it can be interpreted differently. I would like to sincerely apologise for this,” he wrote.

Manchester United after the Uruguyan’s admission of guilt explained that “It is clear to us that there was absolutely no malicious intent behind Edinson’s message and he deleted it as soon as he was informed that it could be misconstrued.

“Edinson has issued an apology for any unintentional offence caused. Manchester United and all of our players are fully committed to the fight against racism.”
