PLAUSIBLE sources closed to the offices of the flagbearer of the President John Dramani Mahama have told Soireenews.com that Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang would likely to be chosen as a potential running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC’s) flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama for the 2024 general elections.
There is intense lobbying by thousands of supporters of former Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, business mogul, Sam Jonah, former deputy chief of staff, Dr Valerie Sawyerr, founder of Ashesi University, Patrick Awuah and former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah to replace Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as running mate with the earlier accusation suggested that she has failed to deliver her home region of Central in the 2020 elections when she was the vice-presidential candidate.
Other potential candidates on the lobbied list are former Local Government Minister Akwasi Oppong Fosu, former Brong Ahafo Minister Eric Opoku, former Health Minister Dr. George Sipa Yankey, Marietta Brew Appiah Oppong, a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Mr Alex Kofi Mould, former Chief Executive of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), and Ekow Spio Garbrah, a former Minister for Trade and Industry under John Mahama.
Earlier reports suggest that thousands of supporters of business mogul, Sam Jonah, former deputy chief of staff, Dr Valerie Sawyerr, founder of Ashesi University, Patrick Awuah and former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah are calling for the replacement of Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang as running mate for their favorite candidates to be chosen but scores of top gurus of the NDC have jumped to the defence of Naana Opoku-Agyemang and stated that she has distinguished herself enough to merit a second chance.
However, credible information from the corridor of the office of the former President indicates that Mr Mahama has already settled on the choice of Professor Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 and that he would soon make the public announcement to that effect.
This news out was reliably informed that Professor Opoku-Agyemang expertise in the education sector, as well as her dedication to empowering Ghanaian youth through quality education, makes her a chance to be maintained by former President Dramani Mahama for his running mate to help the NDC to win the political power in the 2024.
Earlier the Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has expressed shock over the push for Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang to be changed as running mate for NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News, Dr Asah-Asante indicated that even though the individuals who are being mentioned are also qualified, Professor Opoku-Agyemang stands tall among them.
“The names that we have heard are all credible, Mr Mahama will be able to pick and pick the right person to lead the party. But I’m so surprised that people want Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang out, she’s a very important material, she’s somebody who has seen it all, and she’s someone who has what it takes to partner Mr Mahama. Apart from her, there are other good materials who can also do the work.
“They said she couldn’t match up with then running mate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in what sense? That they were discussing economic issues and Professor Naana Jane Opoku -Agyemang couldn’t articulate clearly some of the issues.
“Who is more knowledgeable than the professor? That she can’t learn anything, I challenge those people. The woman is worth her salt, and she can understand any subject. You don’t need an economist, we saw Dr Bawumia/Akufo-Addo combination and the economic results are here for us to see,” Dr Asah-Asante stated.
Former Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah in a statement dated August 9, 2013 dissociated himself from speculations that he’s being considered as a running mate to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress.
Additionally, the Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama has touted 2020 Running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opku Agyemang as the perfect pick for the opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) in the upcoming general election.
Joyce Bawa Mogtari who described Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as a strong contender for the slot believes she will be a good pick for the 2024 polls which promises to be highly contested.
This comes to water down assertions that ex-President Mahama may not stand a chance in the 2024 election if he maintains his running mate.
But speaking on GH Today on GHOne TV Thursday, Joyce Bawa Mogtari said the 2020 Running mate has distinguished herself enough to merit a second chance.
“I believe she’s in strong contention, we are on the cusp of making history, on the verge of winning a hotly contested election. At a point where we need our very best to put forth and Naana Jane certainly stands tall but there are many others. As I said, these are decisions that very high level people will be making of course in consultation with the flagbearer and many other stakeholders, we are very far behind in the process of these sorts of things.
“Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang is a fantastic individual and a woman of enormous grace. She’s been with us through thick and thin right from 2017. She’s one of those who always gave support. As an individual and for my personal opinion, Prof. Naana Jane is a fantastic addition to the ticket.”
