Bono Language to be documented and added to Educational curriculum

The documentation of the Bono Language will create a firmer foundation for linguistic analysis and attach admiration and reverence to the spoken language in Ghana.

Seven-member Board for documentation of the Bono language

A seven-member Board consisting of key personalities in the Bono Region has been inaugurated for the documentation of the Bono language.

The Board consist of the Krontihene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Oboaman Bofotia Boamponsem, Nana Asamoah Kuntwie, Nsesereuhene, former  Deputy Minister for Monitory and evaluation and former Member of Parliament for Dormaa East Constituency, William Kwasi Sabi, Nana Akua Kumi (Show sister of BAR), Adontenhemaa of Aboabo No4, Reverend R.R Yeboah, head Pastor, Seventh Day Adventist Church Sunyani Central Branch and Professor Emmanuel Opuni, Pro-Vice-Chancellor University of Energy and Natural Resources Sunyani.

The main goal of the Board is to steward activities and ideas of Management of the Bono Language Campaigning Team that will help achieve the aim of documenting the Bono Language for educational purposes.

The Bono clan is one of the Akan communities in Ghana. Several personalities including chiefs have raised concerns over the rate at which the language has been abandoned with majority of the Bono land trying to copy the Ashanti language at the expense of abandoning their native language.

The trend according to language experts if not dealt with will contribute to the Bono Language being missed in the Akan languages, which includes Asante Twi, Mfante, Akuapem and the Bono Language. All these languages with the exception of the Bono have been documented in Bible writing, Books and others. 

Speaking at the inauguration of the Board and the Management Team, Founder of the initiative who is the Coordinator and organizer for the Team, Kwaku Ansu reiterated the need for the initiative as its the only way the language can be preserved.

The young man who a graduate of linguistics assured his readiness to ensure this initiative becomes a success story. According to him, all the grounds work including researches and translations have already been done pending its officialisation.

On his part, the Krontihene of the Sunyani Traditional area who is also a Board Member, Oboaman Bofotia Boamponsem assured the Board will ensure the success of this initiative.
