Blinken due to visit Ethiopia and Niger

The newest in a string of trips by top American officials to the continent is US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's two-nation tour of Africa.

The main topics of Mr. Blinken's visit to the two nations this week will be security, a terrible drought, and the danger posed by jihadists in the Sahel.

He will be in Ethiopia on Wednesday to talk about the execution of the peace agreement that the government and rebel forces inked after a brutal two-year conflict.

He will also speak with local aid organizations.

Tens of thousands of people were forced to flee the fighting's aftermath, and Ethiopia is currently dealing with the consequences of the worst droughts the Horn of Africa area has seen in decades.

The first US Secretary of State to tour Niger, Secretary Blinken, will then support efforts to halt the spread of jihadist groups in the Sahel.

His trip to Africa comes after that of US First Lady Jill Biden, who traveled to Namibia and Kenya last month.
