Berekum: CHPS compound abandoned to rot

A CHPS compound constructed at Oforikrom to serve the health needs of the people in the Berekum East Municipality in the Bono Region has been abandoned to rot, according to Soiree News checks.

The project was undertaken by the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC), in 2016 was to help ease the difficulties in accessing health care by the people of Berekum East and its environs.
In Soiree News Papa Richie’s engagement with the beneficiary communities after visiting the abandoned CHPS compound,  the people of Oforikrom and other communities who are mostly farmers appealed to authorities to ensure the operationalization of the facility.
“We are appealing to government through the Municipal Chief Executive, Honorable Kofi Adjei to open the facility for us to use, we are suffering”, the residents told Papa Richie.

“The facility is about 6 years now after it was completed and has since been locked up,  no nurse has been posted here and the Municipal Assembly has paid no heed to our cry for the CHPS compound to open for use”, they added.
When Soiree News Papa Richie contacted the Municipal Health Director, Dr. Duut Esq, he explained that, at the time of construction of the CHIP compound, the location was not well-considered which to him was far from the reach of the people hence, the challenge.
The CHIP compound according to information gathered also has a two-bedroom attached to it to enable the nurses who will be posted there to work to have easy accommodation.
The people are now calling the Municipal Assembly to come to their aid at this time to repair the CHIP compound and Commission it for the people because access to health centers from Oforikrom is also far from them.
Berekum East Municipal District is one of the twelve districts in Bono Region, Ghana.
Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Berekum District on 10 March 1989, which was created from the former Berekum-Jaman District Council.
It was later upgraded to municipal district assembly status and has been renamed as Berekum Municipal District on 29 February 2008; until the western part of the district was split off to create Berekum West District on 15 March 2018; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Berekum East Municipal District.
The municipality is located in the western part of Bono Region and has Berekum as its capital town.
