The Bantama Methodist Church on Thursday, November 12, held its peace summit 2020, to educate Ghanaians on the significance of peace in Ghana.

The event, held under the theme "Towards A Peaceful Election: The Role of the Church and Media," was aimed at defining the role of the church in preaching peace to the congregation and the electronic and print media on the necessity of disseminating serene information as election approaches.

The Immediate past National Peace Council chairman, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante Antwi addressed the gathering that peace is “the standard of life” of individuals in a country and is related to growth, sustainability, health, and education and always a mandate for citizens to preserve its existence to upgrade the state of the republic.

He advised that the National Peace Council always seek to have a country characterized by a dynamic environment where people can engage in their lawful activities.

“The national peace council pursue to facilitate and develop a mechanism for conflict prevention, management and resolution and to build sustainable peace in the country,” he told.

“It is rather unfortunate that most Ghanaians couldn’t be educated has misunderstood the mandate for the peace council and are totally ignorant of its modus operandi,” he added.

He educated that ‘the council promotes cooperative problem solving and institutionalizes the processes of response to conflicts in order to produce outcomes that lead to transformative dialogues.”

Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante Antwi enlightened the importance of knowing that Ghana, in a relatively short space of time has earned a reputation of a democratic peaceful nation that presents a model in a committee of nations.

He counselled that peace in the West Africa country should not be dislocated due to quest for power for the reason that, everyone will suffer when chaos is accepted over love for each other.

The Ashanti Regional Peace Council Chairman, Rev Christopher Andam reminded Christians that harmony with one another is the major motivation behind the death of Christ. He notified that it is the constitutional right of citizens to make a choice during elections which call for no conflict when one candidate is chosen based on the majority interest.

“We are followers of Christ and as He is the embodiment of peace, so shall we pursue,” he said.

“Jesus is the source of peace and as believers, we uplift peace because that was Christ’s mission when he saved us from sin. Everybody demands peace and we must work towards it.

“This program has been a core part of our activities to educate people to refrain from violence. Let’s desist from fighting and creating tension at electoral centres. Whatever the results may be, let’s all accept it because the fact that your party did not win does not make your brother an enemy.

“Let’s organize ourself in such a way that Ghana after the election would still be a peaceful country.”
