Police in New York City says they're looking into a gunshot at a Brooklyn subway station that left at least 13 people injured.

Firefighters were called to the 36th street station in Sunset Park around 0830 local times (1330 GMT) after reports of smoke, according to the New York Fire Department.

At the location, first responders discovered gunshot victims as well as unexploded devices. It is unknown what kind of devices were discovered.

The New York Times reports that police are looking for a guy wearing an orange work vest and wearing a gas mask, citing an unnamed law enforcement officer.

According to the BBC's New York bureau head, John Mervin, a 'massive' presence of police and emergency response vehicles has been reported in the vicinity, closing wide swaths of a major Brooklyn thoroughfare.

The automobiles are said to have blocked access to several blocks of 4th Avenue, a major six-mile (9.7-kilometer) roadway that runs from Downtown Brooklyn to Bay Ridge's Belt Parkway.

Bomb squads have also arrived.

According to a police source on the scene, the suspect is around 5'5 (165cm) tall and is dressed in an orange construction or Metropolitan Transportation Authority vest.

Rain has started to fall in the region, causing several curious passers-by to flee.
