The Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP David Agyemang Adjem has updated that peace has been made certain at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Senior High School following protests on the death of a student suspected to been killed by COVID-19 infection.

SoireeNews reported earlier that a deceased student of the school suffered stomach complications on Monday, July 6, 2020 and was unguarded by teachers which resulted in death.

The incident-triggered protests in the school on Tuesday Night and the Police were called to intervene.

 

 

DCOP David Agyemang Adjem explained that some of the students involved in destroying the windscreen of a saloon car belonging to the headmistress and a few other things have been arrested. He disclosed that the case has been taken over by the Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Mary Owusu Anchiaw.

 

 

“I have spoken to the students. We are going to withdraw some of our men because yesterday (Tuesday) we had information that the students sparked a demonstrating. Apparently, they claimed one of their students is dead and they are not happy so they destroyed some property,” he said.

 

 

“We were here yesterday and we kept the situation under control. So today the Regional Director of Education and some executives are meeting those students to talk to them to resolve whatever the problem is. We came here to ensure that there was peace and as you can see, there is peace and we have done our job so it is up to the ministry and its officers to take the next decisions,” he added.

Asked on the next line of action to be taken by the Regional Police Command on the arrested student’s, the deputy Police Commander responded, “We are waiting on the school authorities to tell us what to do.”

 

 

He urged students and stakeholders to observe the required protocols of the coronavirus pandemic to uphold safety in the Ashanti Region.

“We must also understand that COVID-19 protocols are in place including keeping social distancing and wearing our facemasks. So let us do that and keep ourselves and Ghana safe,” he ended.
