As a child, I encountered discrimination based on my color - Adina
Adina Thembi, a Ghanaian musician, has revealed a heartbreaking story of her early memories, describing the pain and discrimination she endured because of her fair skin tone.
In an interview with Cape Coast's Property FM, Adina described how she was frequently misunderstood and labeled as "disrespectful" or "bad" just because of her skin tone.
"Growing up, because I am a fair skin coloured person, when a lot of people see me at first glance, they judge me to be disrespectful just because of my skin colour," she told me.
She went on: "I've had instances where in the area that we reside, people used to tell my mother to keep a close eye on me just because I was looking very fair in complexion."
She emphasized her childhood anguish and perplexity, stating, "Sometimes when my mother tells me about the complaints she's getting about me, I used to feel so hurt because I don't see what I've done wrong."
The musician said, "But just because of the way God has created me, the moment you set your eyes on me, you conclude that I'll be a very bad girl or disrespectful, and that's some of the experiences I've been through."
