Asshitey has pronounced dead.
Mr Ashitey, who doubles as the former Member of Parliament (MP), for Tema East Constituency on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), died at the Tema General Hospital on Friday, January 7, 2022, after a short illness.
The soireenews.com cited party sources who confirmed that the 68-year-old recently returned from the United States where he was seeking medical attention for an undisclosed illness.
Nene Sakite, who is the NPP secretary of Tema East also confirmed the death on Facebook.
The former Fisheries Minister attended Manhean Middle Mixed School in Tema for his basic and secondary studies.
After successfully completing his middle school leaving certificate studies, he attended Kpando Technical Institute in the Volta area and subsequently Accra Polytechnic for a course in mechanical engineering.
He enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in search of additional knowledge and earned a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
He graduated from GIMPA with an Executive Master’s degree in Governance and Leadership.
Mr Ashitey worked in a variety of businesses both within and beyond the country as a Mechanical Engineer. Among them are Tema Steel Works in Ghana, Accra Brewery Limited in Ghana, Tecnofin Nederlands in the Netherlands, and the General Establishment for Plastics and Industries in Libya.
Mr Ashitey has risen through the ranks of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) since entering the party in 1992, because to his hard work, passion, and dedication.
From 1996 until 2008, he served three consecutive terms as Member of Parliament for Tema East.
He sat on several committees in Parliament, including Mines and Energy, Foreign Affairs, Government Assurances, and the House.
Mr Ashitey served as a Minister of State in the Ministries of Food and Agriculture and Trade, Industry, and President’s Special Initiatives under President John Agyekum Kufuor’s leadership and government.
Mr Ashitey led the NPP to retain and reclaim the majority of Parliamentary seats in Greater Accra during the 2016 elections, ultimately assisting the party in achieving victory and earning him his appointment.
He was previously the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NPP, a member of the NPP’s National Executive Committee, and a member of the NPP’s National Council.
Mr Ashitey is a Presbyterian who enjoys reading, swimming, walking, and good music.
He is the father of four children and is married.
