Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti says he thought the proposed European Super League was 'a joke'.

The former Chelsea manager has passed out his comment following the breakdown of the ESL formation during his pre-match proceedings on Thursday afternoon. According to the decorated Italian, the exclusion of fans, players and the opinion of the media means the competition was bound to fail.

He lashed out at the six 'big' Premier League clubs for defining the EFL as a lack of sporting merit.

“My immediate reaction was they are joking, 'Is it a joke?',” he said in his press conference ahead of Friday's clash against Arsenal – one of those involved quoted by talkSPORTS.

“For every supporter of football, it was a strange day, a surprise. We heard about the Super League in the past few months but I was sure it was not going to happen. What can I say? They were wrong.

“The clubs were wrong because they didn't take into consideration the players, managers and supporters.

“They wanted to build a competition without sporting merit. This is not acceptable because, in our culture, we were brought up to have sporting merit. They were wrong – full stop.”

Ancelotti's side will play

Arsenal at the Emirates on Friday, 7 pm as he pursues Champions League football with six points out of the top four.
