Among the 25 dead in a cattle attack in South Sudan were soldiers

According to reports, at least 25 people—including government soldiers—were slain during a cattle raid in the tumultuous Warrap state of central South Sudan.

Ring Deng, the Warrap state media minister, reported that during the fight with highly armed youngsters, a total of 18 soldiers and seven civilians were slain.

According to the BBC, they included a former county commissioner and a senior military official.

During the event, seven military and six civilians also sustained injuries.

There are concerns that the death toll may reach 65, according to the local newspaper Sudan's Post, but Mr. Ring has denied the allegations.

He claimed that when soldiers attempted to reclaim stolen cows from the teenager, there was a "misunderstanding" that led to the incident.

Cattle raids and revenge attacks have killed thousands of people in South Sudan since independence in 2011.

Insecurity remains rife across the country despite the formation of a unity government in February 2020.
