Amnesty urges Algeria to free detained journalist

Amnesty International has asked Algeria to free imprisoned journalist Ihsane El Kadi right away.

The well-known journalist is suspected of accepting funds unlawfully "in exchange for carrying out operations that could compromise state security" from individuals and organizations.

Amnesty criticized the "ruthless campaign to muzzle critics," calling the accusations against the journalist "trumped-up state security related offenses."

Amnesty International stated that "El Kadi's illegal arrest by the Algerian authorities is a grave injustice aggravated by the breach of his right to a fair trial."

On December 29, following several days of detention, the journalist was placed on remand.

A judge decided to keep him in pre-trial prison once more on Sunday.

No defense attorneys from his team were there to raise objections, according to Amnesty.

Amnesty said no lawyers from his defence team were present at that time to challenge the lawfulness of his imprisonment.
