Allow students with aggregate D7 and E8 to pursue higher education - Alliance For Transition tells tertiary institutions

Students with aggregate D7& E8 are been denied admission to the universities and other tertiary institutions in the country.

The question is why candidates with D7 & E8 be prevented from accessing tertiary education whiles the West African Examination Council (WAEC) recognizes those grades as a pass?

In a press statement signed by the Director for Alliance For Transition, Emmanuel Fianu added that in South Africa a student who does not intend to study science-related courses can enter the university without studying mathematics.

After all, what is the use of allowing a candidate with C6 in all subjects -3 core and 3 electives?

(Aggregate 36) per the currents with 5-A1’s and one D7 or E8 (Aggregate 12 or 13) be prevented from accessing higher education, it stated

It further mentioned that it argues they make Information & Communication Technology (ICT) a core subject to non-science related students rather than mathematics which is considered to be everywhere, after all, students can acquire basic skills in I.C.T which can serve as self-employment to the student right after school hence, these denied prospective candidates eventually become very incensed and peeved and some of them channel their energies and strengths into social vices like prostitution, armed robbery, street hawkers, internet fraud or scammers in a bid to eke out a living.

“I honestly have the greatest convictions that as a developing country we need to enhance much on dimensions, talents and potentials that are engraved in every person and as a country, if we are bent on embarking on massive developments, we need to unearth these endowments and talents in everybody especially the youth. Restricting and denying them entry into tertiary institutions just because of grade D7 and E8 does not really argue well as a developing country and therefore needs to be considered and revoke this policy”, it explained.

“Moreover due to due to this insanity policy and our disastrous educational system has turned us a beast haunting youth and also yielded to numerous remedial schools which are not promoting the education system in Ghana. Such Candidates finds it hard to get funds to register for those re-sit papers. This doesn’t augur well for the development and prosperity that we dream of as a nation”, it said

“I am therefore imploring and beseeching the ministry of education, national accreditation board and the national council of tertiary education to revive their decision so that the countless number of prospective but incapacitated and vulnerable with D7& E8 can be given the platform to showcase their potentials that will eventually inure to the benefit of the Ghanaian people, it elaborated

“This policy has rendered a countless number of senior high school leavers not being able to pursue higher education in our universities. These candidates have therefore resorted to pursuing tertiary programs in colleges of education and nursing training against their interest,” it mentioned

“This situation has adversely affected the productivity of the nation in the wider view since the graduate that is churned out to work in fields against their interest, and do not give their all for optimal productivity. We must begin to analyze and confer critically, evaluate our policies before instituting or implementing them,” it commented.
