The Alliance of Drivers and Ashanti Region Drivers’ Union have endorsed the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the upcoming elections through the numerous policies effected for the improvement of the profession.

At a press conference organized in the capital of the Ashanti Region, Kumasi on Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at the Jubilee Park, the motorists have thrown their support for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party and requested their fellows to cast their vote to retain the current president to do more in his second term of office.

The National Organizer of Alliance for Drivers, Ishmael Mohamed Osman addressed that governance under the NPP has been of immense benefit to Ghanaians particularly Drivers which calls for an open confession after years of stress.

He tackled four key areas – petroleum, insurance, Vehicle Licensing and roads, revealing that those areas during the former administration under the late President John Evans Atta Mills and former President Mahama caused drivers a lot of harm and exhausted major interest in the job hitherto, Nana Akufo Addo has strengthened and resolved the challenges which have brought lot of benefits to the profession.

“We had issues with petrol increments, car insurance, DVLA and a few others,” he said.

“We used to pay 60 cedis for insurance before it was increased to 300 cedis. From the time of former president Kufuor, a gallon of petrol was 3.60p before the late President Mills and former President Mahama increased it to 17.65p, a percentage rise of 400.

“Since 2016, the price per gallon of petrol till date is 18.68p, which has a rise of fuel less than 15 per cent under Nana Addo's government.

“It means the president deserves to be applauded. Drivers used to suffer when we register for driving license at the DVLA but there has been a big transformation in this era. Driving License is now paperless and all you must do is go to the office to fill your forms and within a short time, it will be ready. License B has also been upgraded for drivers to be able to drive 24 passenger vehicle without any trouble. The premium license lasts for two weeks as the replacement is made easy to get.

He appreciated the government for completing most of the major roads in the Ashanti Region which have reduced unusual car maintenance.

“Road networks in Ghana has been transformed and asphalt is now the anthem of our roads. This has contributed to increasing our capital due to the better condition of roads. We appreciate the concern of Nana Akufo Addo and thought it wise to throw our support for him. We will vote for him in December to do more for us,” he added.

The Chairman for Alliance of Drivers, Alhaji Siaka Yaryha in a press briefing informed that president Akufo Addo’s policies have transformed Ghana and every individual today enjoys the national cake, therefore, endorsing the presidential candidate of the NPP is a proof that his initiatives are real and helpful.

He promised that stakeholders of the business will campaign for the political party and deal decently with passengers to spread the good message of the NPP towards them.

He assured that they will not be distracted by political arguments in cars but through peace and admiration, their plans to get the NPP government in power after December 7 would be executed.

Rashid Ayerakwa, a driver and an attendant of the program spoke sincerely saying, “the entire nation benefits from the NPP when they are in power. It will be unfortunate if I wake up on day and witness that Free SHS has been cancelled by some government. The truth is that increment in fuels only does not call for me to vote against the NPP.

"The introduction of free SHS has taken the stress of paying school fees from me. I now use the money for other things and our standard of living today is better. We commend the president for that.”
