Two suspected Armed Robbers arrested by Police for their alleged involvement in the deadly highway robbery put before the Kibi District Magistrate and Circuit Court.

The two suspected Armed Robbers arrested by Police in collaboration with residents in Akyem Ettukrom and Bunso communities will be put before Kibi District Magistrate and Circuit Courts today.

The two are known for their alleged involvement in a deadly highway robbery that occurred on Sunday dawn on Ettukrom to Bunso stretch of the Koforidua to Bunso Highway in the Eastern Region.

The two accused persons are Haruna Amadu, 25, and Joseph Nyira, 25.

The Prosecuting officer will pray the court to remand the accused into Police custody to enable further investigation into the incident.

One of the robbers shot and killed a female trader only identified as Victoria, who was onboard one of the vehicles en route to Akyem Begoro to buy tomatoes.

The Police patrol team later mobilized the youth in the Communities to help chase the robbers in the bush and after several minutes of pursuing the robbers at the site, two near Bunso, the two suspects, Haruna Amadu, 25, and Joseph Nyira, 25 were arrested.

Two unregistered single-barrel shotguns, one machete, cash the sum of GhC257.00, one Itel screen touch mobile phone, three-neck bags containing two voter ID cards belonging to two of the victims, assorted mobile sim cards belonging to victims, and a black student bag containing shirts of the suspects were retrieved.

Some of the robbery victims identified the arrested suspects as those who carried out the robbery operation.

The Akyem Tafo District Police Command recently deployed Police Personnel to mount a barrier on Kukurantumi -Koforidua road as part of measures to clamp down the alarming rate of robbery attacks on road users as well as residents.

The robbers succeeded in robbing a gold dealer and made away with an unknown amount of money and huge quantities of gold, robbed during that incident, and in less than three weeks, the same area has experienced a similar incident.

Close sources indicate that the highway robbers mounted a roadblock at Arboretum Canopy walk Evo Park area, at the dawn of Sunday, to rob commuters at gunpoint. Even though eyewitnesses indicated that it was before 5:00 am, they were not sure of the exact time. 

According to him, the robbers must be invisible as the police have not arrested a single person of this gang.

They added that "the trotro driver was pushed out of his car, they searched inside the car and took away all cash on him.

"The deceased lady also gave them some money and handed over her bag to them, but the robbers were dissatisfied with the amount of money she retrieved shooting her twice in the head and shoulder."

It is unclear the number of vehicles and passengers that were robbed as against that which occurred on Monday, May 24, 2021.
