The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service of Ajumako Enyan Essiam District in the Central Region of Ghana has stated that it recorded 56 defilement cases and 73 teenage Pregnancies last year, 2020.

Madam Betty Gyan Afful who is at the office of DOVSU of Ajumako District police station who revealed the cases to SN24 News in an exclusive interview stated that the victims of the 56 defilement cases were mostly girls under 14 years.

She declared that in 2021, as of March 13, 15 cases of defilement were also recorded and the victims are also girls under age 14.

“In 2020, Ajumako Enyan Essiam District had 56 defilement cases. And in 2021 as of March 10, we have recorded 15 cases of which the children are under the age of 14,” she stated.

She further declared that, in 2020, the same district recorded 73 teenage pregnancies with affected girls below 15 years.

However as of March this year, 2021 her outfit recorded 12 cases, with affected girls, mostly under age 15.

She said most of the teenage mothers are students who had premarital sex with their peers (opposite sex).

She said the causes for Teenage pregnancies in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District are to a large extent, poverty, poor parenting, peer pressure, and school absenteeism.

Madam Betty Gyan Afful however advised parents to take proper care of their children, if possible teach them the adverse effects of becoming a teenage mother.
