After the Nigeria-Ghana match, a Zambian football medic died.

After Nigeria vs. Ghana World Cup qualifying game on Tuesday night, when Nigerian fans began abusing Ghanaian players and personnel on the pitch, causing a stampede, one of Zambia's famed medical professionals perished.

It's unclear how Dr. Joseph Kabungo died; some reports claim he died of a heart attack.

He was one of the medical staff at the match in Abuja, where Nigeria and their arch-rivals tied 1-1, allowing Ghana to qualify on the away goals rule.

Angry Super Eagles fans peppered the opposing team with water bottles thrown from the stands as they exited the pitch, prompting police to use teargas to disperse the crowd.

The Nigerian government has yet to make a public statement about the incident.

The doctor was a regular at major football tournaments, such as the Fifa Arab Cup in Qatar and the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Zambia's footballing community is in mourning following his untimely passing.

In a statement confirming the death, Zambia FA president Andrew Kamanga said, "We send our profound sympathies to Dr. Kabungo's family and the football fraternity at large."

Mr. Kabungo's close friend and Zambian football icon Kalusha Bwalya expressed horror at the news, telling the BBC that he couldn't believe it.

Dr. Kabungo was the national team medic when South Africa won the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in 2012.

At the time of his death, he was also a member of the medical committees of Fifa and the Confederation of African Football (Caf).
