National Secretary for Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Gyantoa has expressed worry over the turnout of women in the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive nomination.

According to her, the situation implies that, even though advocates are working so hard to empower women to take up leadership positions, they seem to be lacking behind.

Her concern comes at the back of the just-released list of 260 MMDCE nominees which includes only 38 females.

Government through the Minister of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Dan Botwe, released the list of nominees for the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) positions.

If approved by their respective Assemblies, they will assist President Akufo-Addo at the local government level during his second term.

Out of the 260 nominees, 38 are females whereas 222 are males.

No female was nominated in the Western and Ahafo regions according to the list.

In the Greater Accra Region, eight females were nominated for the MMDCEs role. But 21 males were nominated in the same region.

Thirty-nine males were nominated in the Ashanti Region; however, only four females were listed for the MMDCE position in the region.

According to the Minister of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Dan Botwe in a press briefing on Sunday afternoon, Regional Directors of the Electoral Commission will on Monday get in touch with the Presiding Members of the various Assemblies and start the process of confirming the President’s nominees.

Prior to the release of the MMDCEs appointment list, the Civil Society Organizations Platform for Good Governance (CSOPGG) demanded that the President ensures that the list is gender-balanced and inclusive, adding that “at least 30 per cent of MMDCEs in every region should be females”.

But the CPP National Secretary Nana Yaa Gyantoa believes the situation is a result of intimidation on the government side against women.

Nana Yaa Gyantoa is calling for a reserved quota for women in government positions.

She however wants women to form alliances and voice out against the recent “bias” melted on women in the just MMDCEs nomination.
