Despite the introduction of the Free Senior High School Policy by President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2017 to allow every Ghanaian child to have access to education notwithstanding the financial status of the parents or the family, over 1,922 students failed to report to school.

Students who sat for the Basic Education Certificate Examination(BECE) in 2020 with better grades, having received placements in the various Senior High Schools across the Ahafo Region did not show any interest in furthering their education, report by the Free SHS Secretariat.

The situation has prompted Ahafo Regional Free SHS Secretariat to embark on a sensitization campaign across the Region to get these students back to school.

The Ahafo Regional Coordinator of Free SHS, Fred Adutwum told Soireenews Correspondent, Sulley Dramani in an interview that the situation is very worrying.

The Public Relations Officer of Ahafo Regional Ghana Education Service, Yaw Frimpong said the Ghana Education Service is trying its best to ensure all students are enrolled in school and therefore appeal to Parents for their assistance.

It can be recalled that in 2017 September, Ghana rolled out its free senior high school programme for fresher students and 424,092 students were expected to be beneficiaries during the 2017/2018 academic year.

The programme also referred to as Free SHS, is part of the education policy promised by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the 2016 presidential election campaign.
