Zongos deserve better, don't fall for the NDC's craftiness - Dr Bawumia
Dr. Bawumia; Vice President of Ghana

Vice President, Dr Muhamadu Bawumia has advised Zongo communities in Ghana not to be misled by the 'syrupy and deceptive' campaign approach of the National Democratic Congress as the elections looms, but rather reassign power in the hands of the New Patriotic Party to continue with their progressive rule.

He enlightened the Zongo Community at Afigya Kwabre South on the 'divide and rule' tactics of the opposition party and notified them on the dangers to voting for a party which earlier did not have their interest at heart after eight years of reign.

The Vice President of Ghana was addressing a durbar of traditional rulers, Zongo Chiefs and Imams, clergy and party faithful during his Ashanti Regional Tour on Wednesday, October 14, 2020.

Rendering from his words, the establishment of the Ministry of Inner-City & Zongo Development, first to happen since Independence is aimed at the welfare of inhabitants through the implementation of policies, programmes and projects to alleviate poverty and empower the communities in every area of work.

His assertion revealed the healthier policies of the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s government towards Zongos has a convincing motive aimed at reforming the former setting of Zongo communities into a contemporary locality.

“There are more than 1,080 Zongos across Ghana, which is more or less equal to a region and there was the need for the Ministry for Inner City & Zongo Development,” he said.

“Nana Addo is the first president since independence to introduce this for the Zongo Community for easy allocation of resources.

“The Zongo development fund has enabled developmental projects at Zongo areas including schools, water, clinics and Astroturf’s, which 10 have been done already.

“Soon, every region will have a Model Senior High School for Zongo communities and it will start in 2021 when we recommence office. Remember, we will not build a mortuary but project that can help to transform our youth.

“Don’t listen to the fables of the NDC, they have nothing for you. Vote massively for the NPP you will see a greater change from next year. Don’t give them a chance to waste our time and resources,” he added.

Dr Bawumia further admonished that the ‘rice and sugar’ handouts given by the former president and flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama during Muslim fasting are not the solution to end the complaints of Zongo residents over the hostile approach of ruling governments.

He counselled that voting for Nana Addo to extend his term is a blessing to keep the showers of progress on them.

“From independence to 2016, there is no single budget that has included developmental projects in Zongo communities. The NDC wanted to create divide and rule in Ghanaian politics using Zongos and called on them not to vote for the NPP.

“That was propaganda but ask yourself, what did they do for Zongo whiles in power? Nothing.

"Whenever it is time for Sala, they bring rice and sugar to entice us to vote for them. The president of Ghana recognized these acts and introduced the new Zongo policy of the NPP. We don’t have to give in to the NDC again. Give Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo four more years and we’ll see a total change,” he added.
