Year of Roads: Old Tafo Municipality cut sod to begin 4-km road project

The Old Tafo Municipality has undergone a sod-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, to begin a 4-kilometer road project under the auspices of the Ghana Secondary Cities support project, an initiative of the World Bank.

 

 

A similar sod-cutting ceremony happened at Asokwa last month credited to the government of Ghana to assist Regional and National institutions to provide municipal assemblies with the support needed for effective urban management and service delivery.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive of Old Tafo, Hon. Fred Obeng Owusu addressed that the initiative is part of government’s overall effort to achieving the objective of the National Urban policy framework which aims to promote sustainable development.

 

 

He disclosed that the World Bank-sponsored project would improve construction of a four-kilometer Tafo- Ahenboronomo Area road including the construction of drains, pedestrian walkway, and installation of street light to improve visibility in the Municipality.

 

 

“Government with funding from the World Bank through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) has initiated Ghana Secondary City Support Program with an aid to improve urban management and provision of basic urban services in 25 selected Municipal Assemblies across the country of which the old Tafo municipal assembly is one of the beneficiaries.

 

 

“The Old Tafo Municipal Assembly having passed the urban assessment for the year 2019 has received funding to improve urban mobility and enhanced motor and pedestrian traffic within the municipality.”

The project is expected to be completed in nine calendar months beginning 22 July 2020. The MCE took the opportunity to entreat all relevant stakeholders including project-affected persons to cooperate with the Assembly for the successful completion of the project within the period schedule.

 

 

The Contractor in charge of the project, Mr. Isaac Owusu pleaded to traders by the roadside affected by the construction to cooperate with the engineer and workers of the road.

 

 

“We need the support of people in the Tafo Municipality as we begin the project. Affected people must cooperate with us to make the work trouble-free. We are very ready to finish works on the road. Although the duration of work is nine months yet we will do our best to complete before the allocated time,” he assured.
