The running mate to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang says an NDC government will increase the period of maternity leave in Ghana from three months to four months.

Prof Jane Naana, who revealed this in a conversation with the youth on the International Youth Day, said it forms part of the many policies in the party’s manifesto, to improve the lives of Ghanaians.

According to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, lactating mothers will be given the permission to work half their usual time until their wards are 9-month old.

“I sympathize with mothers but you will be happy to know when our manifesto is launched that we have increased the maternity leave.

“We have moved it from three months to four months, fully paid maternity leave and we are also going to ensure that until the child is 9 months, the woman truly works half time,” she said.

The Former Education Minister also indicated that, the NDC prioritizes the inclusion of women in the highest level of decision making, and if voted into power, will roll out policies to advance the cause of women and the marginalized in the country.

“Sometimes decisions are made that for corporate social responsibility the company must invest in a certain sport, it’s fine, they must sponsor football, there’s nothing wrong with it but who are the people making the decision?

“None of them babysits, none of them changes diapers, none of them carries a baby and looks at the computer, none of them breastfeeds, spoon feeds and reads at the same time so why would they make the decision for you? So this is why we need to support this decision that has been made,” she added.

She argued that the records available shows the NDC places much importance on the welfare of women than the NPP government.

“I want all of us to know that it was during the time of H.E John Evans Atta-Mills that Kotokraba market was initiated. It was completed by H.E John Dramani Mahama and there’s a day care in that place.

“It was during the time of John Dramani Mahama that Kejetia market was initiated and completed, there’s a day care in that place. So you see, who cares about women? she asked.
