Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo Dankwa, has reiterated the urgent need for the country to restructure its economy in line with the goal of attaining self-sufficiency.

Akufo-Addo said the country has to break free from a ‘raw material producing and exporting economy’ which was structured by neo-colonial powers.

“We must make concerted efforts to break away from the neo-colonial structure of the raw material producing and exporting economy, which has, largely, been our lot.”

Akufo-Addo said his government will work towards transforming Ghana’s economy to a more industrialized one, with added value.

“As a President of the Republic, I am determined to my Leadership of Ghana the period that witnessed the laying of the foundation for the transformation of the economy from an exporter of raw materials and retailer of cheap imported goods to a modern, value-adding, industrialized one”

Akufo-Addo made these remarks in a statement celebrating this year’s edition of "Ghana’s Founders Day"

He added that, his government will strengthen the healthcare delivery system, the education system as well as create decent jobs for all citizens.

He implored Ghanaians to work with the government to achieve the set aside goal.

About Ghana's Founders Day

Founders’ Day is a statutory public holiday celebrated on August 4th annually.

Prior to the passing of the Public Holiday Amendment Bill into law in March 2019, September 21st which is the birthday of Ghana’s first democratically-elected, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was regarded as the Founder’s Day.

August 4 became the founders day in spite of criticisms in regards to alleged attempts to 'dilute history'

August 4 is noted as the date for the formation of the Aborigines’ Rights Protection Society by John Mensah Sarbah in 1897, and the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in 1947 by J.B. Danquah and George Alfred “Paa” Grant.

President Nana Akufo-Addo in a message to the nation on Sunday, August 4th, 2019 said “we acknowledge the role played by successive generations of Ghanaians towards the liberation of our country from colonization and imperialism.”

He urged that “it is time we rose above partisan considerations, set the record straight, recognise the collective efforts in gaining our freedom and independence from colonial rule and do right by our history.”
