Voters' Registration: EC Warns Political Parties Against Taking Details of Registrants

Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has admonished political party agents at voters’ registration centres against collating details of registrants.

The EC says the ‘unlawful’ act has posed challenges to the ongoing exercise.

“The picking of information on the ID card by the party people; this is causing a lot of challenges at the registration centres and at times leading scuffles between applicants as well as the agents,”Samuel Tettey, a Deputy Chairman of the EC said at a press conference today [June 13, 2020].

The EC, however, did not indicate what sanctions will be meted to persons found culpable of engaging in this ‘unlawful’ act.

Mr Tettey reiterated that, the EC will provide daily reports number of persons who have successfully registered to political parties. Hence, trumping the need to individually (per political parties) collect them.

He therefore implored political parties to educate their agents who are these centres to know and respect the boundaries

Meanwhile, the EC says it will make up for the time lost at some registration centres where there were reports of delay on Sunday, July 12, 2020.

This was after the third phase of the exercise which began on Sunday [July 12], was met with alleged activation and network problems.

The commission said “details of the extension for the affected Registration Centres will be communicated in due course.”
