More than 2,000 people including university students, adolescent girls and boys came together on Thursday, September 12, 2019 to celebrate the first year anniversary of U-Report in Ghana at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi.

U-Report is a social messaging tool and data collection system that seeks to improve citizen engagement, inform stakeholders and foster positive change was introduced by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to have the voices of more than 60,000 people across Ghana heard and be kept up to date with vital information.
It was also designed to help young people respond to polls, think about issues that impact them and make suggestions by providing essential information to subscribers. UNICEF introduced U-Report in Ghana in August 2018 with support from Korea International Cooperation (KOICA) and Global Affairs Canada.

Speaking at the event, the UNICEF representative in Ghana, Mrs. Anne Claire Dufay revealed the delight in marking the 30th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child with Ghana as the first country to approve.

“We are also delighted the first anniversary of U-Report. The 60,000 people who have signed up have shown that this tool is popular, relevant and youth friendly. We look forward to more young U-Reports joining, so they can share their opinion, access information that is to them and ultimately become more empowered,” she said.

Popular figures like M.anifest and Worlasi joined UNICEF and partners to celebrate.

Anyone over 10 years of age can register by texting the word “join” to 1755 for free on MTN, Vodafone and AirTigo or by sending a message on the U-Report Ghana Facebook page, @URepGhana.
