Manchester City will play Olympique Lyon in the quarterfinal of the Champions League.

The Citizens eliminated Real Madrid on Thursday night following two Rafael Varane’s errors, which resulted, into City’s goal.

Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus were on the score sheet for the home side yet Benzema’s only goal could not push the Spanish champions ahead for more.

Manchester City’s victory marks the first time an English side have won both legs in a Champions League knockout tie against Spanish opposition since 2008/09, when Liverpool won 5-0 on aggregate against Real Madrid.

Raheem Sterling opened the scores in the 9-minute after a terrible error by Varane. The Frenchman gave the away the ball 10 yards out at the byline. He was quickly robbed by Jesus, who squared for Sterling to slot into a near-empty net.

The goal was Raheem Sterling’s 100 in all competitions for Manchester City, becoming the first Englishman to reach three figures for the club since Dennis Tueart in 1981.

Pep Guardiola’s side kept the possession on in areas that led to Real Madrid’s downfall The home side set pressing traps for their opponents and was really working right on the night.

Whiles City were looking good in keeping much of the ball, Real Madrid equalized through Karim Benzema in the 28-minute.

It was fantastic work from Rodrygo on the right, floating past Cancelo with ease to get to the byline. He then lifted it central as Benzema easily got above Fernandinho, and headed into the bottom right corner with ease.

Sterling was untamable in the second half after Gabriel Jesus was positioned in the central position with Foden left and Sterling staying right. A sublime through ball from De Bruyne, from way deep found Sterling in-behind. He was through on goal, had it on his left foot, and slightly lashed at it, as Courtois beat it away with his right hand.

The visitors began stepping up play but Jesus hit them with the nail in 69-minute after another Varane mistake.

It was a long ball up from City, Varane lost his bearings with the first looping ball, allowed it to bounce, and his header back, aimed for Courtois was weak and allowed Jesus to steal in.

The Brazilian had so much to do, but got a fine touch on the ball and saw it bounce into the net from an angle.

Real Madrid have been eliminated before the quarter-finals in consecutive Champions League campaigns for the first time since 2009/10.

The results means City will play Lyon on Saturday in a one-legged tie.
