A section of drivers have commended President Nana Addo Dankwa-Akufo Addo for the increment in the price of transport fares but insists they expected more than the accepted rate.

Transport fares were increased by 15 percent last Tuesday, effective on Saturday, July 11, 2020, by the Ministry of Transport.

According to the Deputy Transport Minister, Titus Glover in an interview with Adom News, the government took the decision in acknowledgment of the impact the Covid-19 pandemic has had on drivers yet complaints raised by a section of motorists means they are not content with the proportion.

SoireeNews spoke to the Secretary of Alliance Drivers of King Jesus - Kumasi, Agyei Bekoe Bismark - he commended Nana Akufo-Addo for his concern towards drivers but called for a raise to sustain themselves and families following the impromptu adjustment made to practice social distancing in vehicles.

“The president must be commended for price increment of fares,” he said.

“We are all under laws and what the government proposed during the early stages of COVID-19 was heeded for the progress of the country. My plea to the president is that the percentage increment is minimal therefore if he could improve it to favor us following the sacrifices, we will be very grateful,” he added.

Agyei Bekoe also suggested that social distancing in vehicles is not that necessary at this time if the various health protocols could be observed by drivers and passengers. He recommended that if the number of travelers could be reverted to the former, it would help raise the standard of living of drivers and stakeholders in the trade.

“We used to load four passengers (taxi) until the virus outbreak. We are protecting each other to prevent COVID-19 from escalating through the health protocols outlined and so I will plead to government to permit us to revisit our former numbers of loading.”

He further advised drivers and mates to be patient and resolve any misunderstanding that arises out of extracting fares from passengers.

“Extracting money from someone is very tough and these are likely to happen. I am entreating drivers, mates, and bookmen to be patient with passengers who are not abreast with the new regulations on fares to authorize peace.
