Ghana’s Special Prosecutor, Martin A. B. K. Amidu has revealed the commencement of the investigations of allegations of bribery involving some Ghanaian officials in the Military aircraft deal.

The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo ordered a probe into accusations of bribery by European plane maker Airbus to ensure the purchase of three military planes between 2009 and 2015. Ghana was among over a dozen countries involved in a $4-billion settlement Airbus agreed with European and U.S. regulators concerning alleged bribes to clinch sales of its aircraft.

According to a statement released by the Office of the Special Prosecutor on Monday, February 10, 2020, “the relevant domestic public institutions which can assist the on-going investigations have been contacted to provide information and documents under Act 959”.

It further continued that “contacts have also been initiated with the appropriate foreign authorities as provided by law for information and documents to assist the on-going investigations.”

An appeal has also been made to the public not to “speculate or politicize the disclosures made in the deferred prosecution agreements and judgements so as to allow the office to treat the suspected crimes as suspected crimes simpliciter and nothing more, pending the conclusion of the investigations.
