The National Peace Council have joined critics in mounting pressure on the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prosecute Mavis Hawa Koomson for her involvement in a fracas at voters’ registration incident in Kasoa.

Chairman of the National Peace Council Most Rev Emmanuel Asante has asked the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) to institute disciplinary action against the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Hawa Koomson for tarnishing its image.

“I wish that the NPP will take note of this and take action in respect of what she has done to bring their name into disrepute,” he said.

Rev Asante said whilst the party prepares to sanction her, she must do the honorable thing by resigning from her post as Minister for Special Development Initiatives.

Earlier Monday, officials of the Electoral Commission closed down the Step to Christ registration center in Kasoa after ‘armed thugs’ reportedly stormed the premises and fired gunshots.

Per eyewitnesses account, the men numbering at least 15 arrived at the centre with the MP (Hawa Koomson) around 8 am and tried to sack some prospective voters.

Subsequently, Hawa Koomson, in narrating the incident, explained that, she was rather attacked by some men from the NDC at the centre. Therefore, she fired a warning shot in self-defence since her police escort were absent at the time. She however debunked reports of her men firing any gun.

However, in an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, the Chairman of the National Peace Council explained that the resignation would be the only way to mitigate what he described as the embarrassment suffered by President Akufo-Addo as a consequence of the Minister’s action.

Most Rev Emmanuel Asante is also of the view that the development should trigger processes among the Privileges Committee of Parliament to “meet and discuss this issue.”
