Over 1.8 Million Ghanaians registered in 5 Days – EC

Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has described its ongoing voters’ registration exercise as “successful” so far, considering the rate at which eligible participants are being registered.

According to the Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Bossman E. Asare, the commission has successfully registered 1,894,000 persons in the span of five days since the registration commenced.

“In the last five from Tuesday [June 30, 2020] to Saturday [July 4, 2020] the persons we have been able to register were 6,000 short of reaching 1,900,000” he said on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo today [ July 6].

Unable to give exact details at the moment, Mr Asare said, so far, the regions that have registered the most persons in Ghana are the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions. This is followed by the Eastern and Central Regions.

He noted that an official statement detailing the exact number per region registered, will be put out soon.

Meanwhile, the EC has said the number of persons registered are expected to rise significantly as additional Biometric Voters’ Registration kits have been procured.

Mr Bossman Asare said, the first phase of the registration was conducted with 4,000 BVR kits. However, the commission is going into the second phase of the registration which begins today, with 8,000 kits.

The EC therefore implied that, it possible it can double the 1.8 million it had registered in the first phase, this week.
