The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the number of persons captured in the just ended mass voters’ registration exercise.

According to the Commission, a total of 16,663,699 voters were registered as of the end of the new register compilation on Thursday, August 6, 2020.

The EC made this known at its 8th edition of the Let the Citizens Know series.

Addressing journalists at the press briefing in Accra on Friday, August 6, 2020, Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, Dr Bossman Asare, said:

“Since the last briefing the four top regions have maintained their positions though the Greater Accra region has especially lost some grounds in percentage terms from 21.34 % to 20.8% of the total registered.”

“The Ashanti region also reduced marginally by 0.1% to its current 17.9%.
Both the Eastern and the Central regions have maintained their previous 9.6% and 9.3% respectively.”

“Among the remaining regions, the following have increased in percentage terms- Western, Western North, Upper West, Northern, and Upper East- and the following have maintained their percentages- Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Oti, North East, and Savanna.”

“Only the Volta region reduced in percentage terms in this group,” he noted.

The Commission had earlier projected to register 15 million eligible Ghanaians in the 38-day mass registration exercise, but exceeded that target by 1,663,669.

The EC noted that it has 797,493 people “quarantined” on multiple registrations and exceptions list, for which it has to set up an Adjudication Committee to manually sort out the cases.

With a mop-up registration scheduled to take place at the various offices of the Commission on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9, the figure will shoot up.

The EC has described the feat (registering more than its projected target) as a major milestone considering the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic which was a great concern to stakeholders.
