The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye says Parliament will do everything to improve and strengthen the capacity of the Parliamentary Press Corps to enable them to perform their duties efficiently.

He addressed Parliament before the start of debate on the President’s State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27, 2020 stating that under his leadership, and with the cooperation of the Minority and the Majority leaders, Parliament was currently revising its rules to allow the media to be stronger in covering business in Parliament and committee meetings in general.

Prof Mike Ocquaye on Wednesday threatened members of the Parliamentary Press Corp with sanctions if they leave the chamber to cover press conferences held by members of either side of the House while proceedings are ongoing.

“We are for them but they are our children. We must also help them and direct them to develop and that is a national duty,” he stated.

Prof. Oquaye, however, added that, “No group of people is beyond criticism but let us do our reportage professionally. Facts are sacred, comments are free but report facts accurately.”
