The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded that the Akufo-Addo government give a detailed account of funds generated in the failed operations of the Power Distribution Services (PDS) in the country.

The opposition wants full disclosure of the “total amount of monies the PDS collected from electricity consumers, in the form of electricity bills from 1st March, 2019, to 18th October, 2019’ when the concession agreement was in force.

The party’s National Communication Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, at its media event dubbed ‘Corruption Tracker series’, argued that per the NDC’s audit, an amount of GHS 1.5 billion was accrued in the ‘fraudulent’ PDS operation, and is yet to be accounted for by the Akufo-Addo government.

“From our checks, the total amount of monies PDS collected from electricity consumers in the form of electricity bills was over GHS 1.5 billion, but we have not heard any official communication from the Akufo-Addo government even though it’s been well over a year since the notorious PDS concessionaire arrangement was terminated because of a fraudulent demand guarantee. For this matter, Ghanaians and electricity consumers ought to know the amount of money we paid to that fraudulent entity called PDS.”

The NDC further asked questions regarding individuals behind the PDS deal.

“Since the Minister for Energy, honourable Peter John Amewu told Ghanaians that the insurance guarantee PDS presented for the takeover of the over 20 billion worth of assets of ECG, which allegedly issued the said guarantee, who were those who perpetrated this fraud, and what actions has President Akufo-Addo taken to ensure that they answer for this fraud”?

“Who are the state actors who neglected to perform their fiduciary responsibility to the state by failing to conduct the necessary due diligence on the insurance Guarantee presented by PDS, and what action has President Akufo-Addo taken against them”

Sammy Gyamfi noted that the NDC shall ensure the arrest and prosecution of persons “who directly or indirectly played roles in this stinking PDS scam”.

Sammy Gyamfi said the NDC will ensure “that all monies… collected by PDS from electricity consumers are properly accounted for and ensure the retrieval of any amounts misappropriated by the company”.
