Lionel Messi has paid tribute to Diego Maradona, whose demise occurred on Wednesday morning through a cardiac arrest.

The Argentine football great passed away at the age of 60, having won the hearts of many with his talent and winning mentality in games across the world.

Maradona was once a Barcelona player and guided the Blaugranas into winning three trophies – a Copa del Rey, a Copa de la Liga and a Spanish Super Cup. He scored an impressive 38 goals in 58 matches for the Catalan club before his departure to Italy for Napoli.

Messi, the greatest Argentine of all time in the new generation was left out of Barcelona’s squad to host Dynamo Kyiv and on hearing the news of his compatriot, took Instagram to pay tribute.

 “A very sad day for all Argentines and for football.

“He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal.

“I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”

Maradona during his 60 birthday on October 30 this year made a self-confession of his regrets in football and what he wished to change if granted the opportunity. He accused drugs of his short span in the game and the lack of parenthood.

"Football gave me everything I have, more than I could have imagined," he told Marca. "And if I hadn't had that [drug] addiction, I would have been able to play much more. "But now that is in the past, I am well and what I regret most is not having my parents."

Cristiano Ronaldo also paid respect to the Argentine through Twitter saying,” Today I bid farewell to a friend and the world farewells to an eternal genius

“One of the best ever, an unmatched magician. Leaves too soon but leaves a boundless legacy and a void that will never be filled. RIP. You will never be forgotten.”

Three days have been prompted by Argentina to mourn the iconic footballer.
