A restriction on movement in the Ashanti Region of Ghana has been imposed by government under the Imposition of the Restriction Act, 2020 (Act 1012).

An indefinite ban has been placed on all special market days of the various markets, gathering for games and keep fit, and mass movement of foreigners into the Region.

The measures outlined by the government is to help restrain the coronavirus from spreading in the Region, which is second in the regional distribution of the COVID-19 cases with 25.

A statement released on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 by the Office of the Ashanti Regional Co-coordinating Council, signed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Simon Osei Mensah stated that, “all special market days of the various markets in all communities within the Ashanti Region are definitely suspended. However, daily market activities in the various communities will go on as usual.”

The statement further urged Ghanaians and inhabitants in the Ashanti Region to “join hands together as people to strictly observe all laid down protocols washing of hands, sanitizing and social distancing, and be vigilant on a daily basis and with the help of the Almighty God, this too shall pass.”
