‘Local Rice Is Cheaper Than Imported Rice’ – An Investor Responds to Dumelo's Comments
John Dumelo

Kojo Akoto Boateng, CEO of New Media at Citi FM / Citi TV, has reacted to Ghanaian actor/farmer/Politician, John Dumelo’s ‘say’, that, Many Ghanaian would opt for local rice if the prices were cheaper.

According to John, after giving shipping duty-fee for the imported rice, it’s still cheaper than the local rice, which is originally manufactured in the country with no shipping duty fee.

John has cautioned the local famers to do something with the prices because once it’s cheap, it’s the best.

“It will interest you to know that imported rice (after paying all the shipping and duties at the port) is still cheaper than our local rice. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a farmer and a huge advocate for consumption of made in Ghana products but the patriotic patience of Ghanaians will quickly run out if our local rice farmers don’t do anything about their pricing. Same as our local chicken and the imported one. Once it’s cheap, it’s the best.

‘It might not be the fault of the farmers when pricing. The unit cost of producing a bag of rice depends on external factors (high interest rates, taxes, fuel costs etc.) which is beyond their control. We must do more to support farmers across the country. Competitive pricing and branding are sine qua non to Ghanaians being patriotic but all hope is not lost. Ghana shall prosper.”

Kojo Akoto Boateng reacting to John’s post stated,

“Your post is misleading……with respect to the pricing. Local Rice is cheaper than imported rice. There’s a lot of data to show this……. the ESOKO commodity index, the open market prices.’

‘Even imported rice which is being promoted through discounted sales in the supermarket are still more expensive than the local brands on average. I think you may want to revisit your notes’.
