The Leo Messi saga has taken another twist, as LaLiga have released a statement clarifying that the Argentine must pay his release clause if he wants to leave Barcelona.

Messi is confident that he can depart for free due to an agreement with the club, as well as reports in the last 24 hours emerging that deem the clause invalid in the final year of his deal.

However, in response, LaLiga have made clear to Messi that he can only disassociate himself with Barcelona by paying his release clause of 700 million euros.

LaLiga is in agreement with Barcelona over the contract of the Argentine, and their statement is a boost for the Catalan club, while a huge setback for Messi and his lawyers.

It remains to be seen now how Messi reacts to LaLiga's statement and whether he attends Monday's training session.
