Vincent Kompany says he never thought he could one day lead Manchester City with such a huge fan base.

The Belgian International parted ways with the Citizens for his boyhood club, Anderlecht in the summer due to a hamstring injury. A testimonial match was played between Manchester City legends XI and Premier League Legends XI to honor the former captain for his service at the Etihad. The match ended 2-2 with goals from Martin Petrov for City but Robin Keane equalized later. Van Persie put the Premier League legends ahead with a second goal from long range yet a header from Benjani gave City the equalizer.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the 33-year old revealed that the level at which Manchester City has stretched in world football is amazing and he is proud to be a part of the club’s history. Vincent was accompanied by his children Kai, Sire and Sienna before the gamea as he revealed, “You might have noticed, I’m not playing – it's typical me to be injured for my own testimonial!”

City announced they had commissioned a sculpture of Kompany to be built outside the Etihad, while a road within the club's training ground has been renamed Vincent Kompany Crescent.

“It’s such a big club now and you can see it will always be a big club of City fans and it’s a former club now. To have such a fan base seemed impossible and for a minute, I just stood still and enjoyed it. I was enjoying it from the bench,” he said.

Kompany’s last game for the Sea Blues was against Leicester City in the Premier League. His dying minute of magic with a thunderbolt to give City the only goal was all what he needed to sign off in style to win the Premier League for the forth time.

“My last game was against Leicester and we all know what happened in that game (made reference to the goal he scored) and I was fine, I was good and it was good for me not to play today but enjoy the moment and some great players”

Kompany described the game as one of the best after witnessing impressive play and outstanding goals on the night. The City legends XI was managed by Pep Guardiola as former manager, Roberto Martinez was in charge of the Premier League legends XI.

“Imagine these guys in the peak of their abilities. They were awesome to watch. I was reminiscing the game and said it was horrible to play against these guys but in the end we got a draw,” Vincent expressed.

Fifty One thousand people attended the game at the Etihad.

The money raised from the friendly will go towards Tackle4MCR, a charity Kompany set up with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to help with homelessness in the city.
