Ronald Koeman could turn to Liverpool’s Sadio Mane if Lionel Messi's wish of leaving Barcelona is granted.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Mane would welcome a move from Anfield after helping Liverpool to their first Premier League trophy last season.

Real Madrid were close to negotiating with Liverpool for the left-winger but Los Blancos refusal to meet the Reds £108m asking price tuned off their interest.

The Senegalese notched 22 goals in 47 appearances for Liverpool this season and his influence in games was key following the Reds winning four major trophies in two seasons.

If Messi ends his Barcelona reign, a move he is determined to initiate after almost two decades in the Spanish La Liga, former Southampton manager, now employed to manage his former club, Ronald Koeman has identified Sadio Mane as his key signing to replace the six-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Mane was formerly managed by the Dutchman before his move to Anfield. The 28-year old has refused to renew his contract with the Premier League champions although he still has three years to play for in the Premier League.

Liverpool believes the delay in extension means the player wants a way out if a better offer comes his way.

Jurgen Klopp is hoping to maintain his current squad to defend their title next season yet more than a £100m will provide him options to sign new players to revive his squad after falling short of funds due to the consequence of the coronavirus pandemic.

As Messi’s transfer is still going through talks with the Barcelona board, all other related deals involved would be put on hold until he makes up his mind to stay or leave.
