KNUST SHS: Oforikrom MP cautions the media for not being precise in their reportage.
Dr. Emanuel Marfo, Member of Parliament for Oforikrom constituency

The Member of Parliament for Oforikrom constituency, Dr. Emanuel Marfo has called on the media to be accurate in their reportage in such a time where coronavirus is intimidating lives across the country.

His advice was regarding issues that surrounded the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Senior High School protests following the death of the late Richard Sam, a student of the school on Tuesday, July 7, 2020.

The deceased according to reports suffered stomach complications and was unguarded by teachers which later resulted in his death.

According to the Member of Parliament, speculations by the media to distant people concerning the school was entirely dissimilar to what he was told and witnessed.

He disclosed that whiles driving from town reports from a section of the media interpreted that the ‘school was in flames’ as a result of students demonstration so he thought by the time he arrives, the mess created would have been unhealthier yet he was surprised to witness a different picture of peace.

Stories cooked to the world explained that the deceased died of the novel coronavirus; which put guardians into panic to withdraw their wards from the school.

He reprimanded the radio and television networks who reported ill on the incident and informed that they should revisit the ethics of journalism and refrain from fabricating stories.

“The report outside was far different from what I am witnessing. The student was sick and was taken away by parents. He was then admitted to hospital and unfortunately passed away as a result of stomach complications That is the story and nothing else. Everything here is in place and students are observing the needed protocols.

“We are sorry for the loss of the family and we are together mourning with them.

He advised that” students should focus on their academics, take personal responsibility in such a COVID time, and observe all the protocols outlined by the president.”

“Their safety is the most important and we are encouraging them to,” he added.
