The Ashanti Regional Assembly Members have tagged the former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama ‘a liar’ for making vain promises in a bid to win back power from the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government.

According to the former presiding member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Nana Kofi Senya, assurances made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer is “bent on creating divisions among people of like minds for their parochial interest’ hence the need to dismantle his strategies and focus on building a better Ghana.

“With the view to registering our utter dismay over the widely reported meeting former president John Dramani Mahama had with a section of elected assembly members a couple of days ago to be precise on 30 July 2020,” he said.

“In the said meeting the former president was quoted to have promised Assembly Members of some goodies and incentives including payment of monthly stipends to be sourced from monies that will be realized from the drastically reduced ‘elephantized’ Ministers of nana Akufo Addo led administration should his party, the NDC attains power in the upcoming general elections which he is contesting as a presidential candidate.

“We are sick and tired of this lying spirits who are bent on creating divisions among people of like mind of their parochial interest. We are up to think that the former president had no clear cut policy to resolve the assembly members in the event of been elected president come 2020 elections hence his resolve to the 'drastically reduced mantra' echoed by his predecessor.”

At a press conference in the capital of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, at the True Vine Hotel, the Assembly members exposed that the strategies adopted by the former Ghanaian leader is for his own gain, therefore, heeding to his call is time devastating following similar approaches made in previous years but none received any benefit.

“Former President John Mahama for almost four years on after exiting office has now found delight in hopping from one region to the other propagating and detailing the unsuspecting public of what he had installed for the people of Ghana with special emphasis on assembly members vis-a-vis welfare packages only to suit his whims and caprices.

“In the NDC 2012 manifesto, for instance, similar juicy promises were made to assembly members but to no avail.”

Members have appealed to John Dramani Mahama ‘to leave the former Assembly Members alone in his diabolical scheme of things, unguarded political utterances, and activities hence the present government in its attempt to change the status quo where the Assembly members are key actors of the decentralization process through a Referendum to select and elect on political lines was stoutly opposed by his party (NDC) leading to its unfortunate suspension.”
