The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced when the 2023 presidential election will hold.

The date is February 18, 2023.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, made the disclosure on Thursday.

He spoke at the inauguration of the Ad hoc Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution.

Yakubu told House of Representatives members that they are about 855 days left for the next general elections.

The disclosure comes on the heels of manifold controversies trailing the nomination of Lauretta Onochie as commissioner of the INEC by President Muhammadu Buhari.

It was gathered that the president on Tuesday, October 13, nominated Onochie, his special assistant on social media, from Delta state for the INEC job, according to Legit.

The president also nominated Professor Mohammed Sani (Katsina) Professor Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti) and Seidu Ahmed (Jigawa state) for the electoral commission's top position.

In a swift reaction, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the development as "provocative, ominous and an attack on the constitution and democratic practices."

Human right lawyer, Femi Falana, also rejected Onochie's nomination, saying the media aide to the president is a card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
