Whilst this is the news that many in Spanish football expected, Monday afternoon saw the landscape of football in the country changed with the official announcement that Iker Casillas was going to stand to become RFEF president.

The former Real Madrid goalkeeper was forced to retire when he suffered a heart attack during training with Porto in 2019, yet he will now look to try and rejuvenate the Spanish Football Federation.

"Yes, I will present myself to the Presidency of the RFEF when the elections are called," Casillas confirmed.

"Together we will put our federation at the height of the best in the world of football."

With this announcement, Casillas' retirement, has now all but been confirmed, despite the fact he hasn't publicly acknowledged it.

"I have informed the president of my club, FC Porto, of this decision and I can only express my deepest gratitude to them."

Casillas is seen the candidate of hope and change, with the former Spanish international looking to bring respect back to the organisation.

"We're working with the utmost respect and determination in our candidacy," he added.

"More than 23,099 voters await us in fair and transparent elections, 139 assembly members will decide."

Interestingly, MARCA.com ran a survey which asked whether Casillas would be a good RFEF president and 93 percent of voters replied positively, and furthermore in a direct question asking Casillas or Rubiales, 94 percent of the vote went to the former Los Blancos stopper.
