The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Obuasi East, Madam Faustina Amissah has disclosed that the rate of infections of COVID-19 would have been worse in the Obuasi Municipality had aggressive testing not been conducted earlier.

She disclosed that samples through the testing in the various communities were submitted to the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research (KCCR), where the tests were accumulated due to the workload until the figures started trooping in.

“We didn’t wait for symptoms to show before embarking on the aggressive testing. If we had delayed, there would have been a disaster as I speak now,” she said.

Obuasi became the hotspot for COVID-19 in the Ashanti Region following the drastic rise in figures because of inhabitants' failure to treat the coronavirus infection as a life-threatening concern.

Speaking on Kessben FM with Omanhene Adu Boakye on Wednesday morning, Madam Faustina spoke that every entry point in the Municipality is been monitored by security forces to implement the wearing of masks; an approach to control the spread of coronavirus adding that nurses have also been placed at the various borders to engage inhabitants in coronavirus testing to identify infected persons and take the necessary steps to keep the virus in check.

Obuasi East DCE prefers curfew over lockdown due to challenging conditions

Madam Amissah admitted that although contact tracing in the Municipality has not been perfect due to the inflexibility of persons yet things are falling in place as expected.

Asked whether lockdown is necessary to contain the movement of the virus, she discarded the idea and called for a curfew instead. Her reasons were related to the challenges associated with food sharing and how through it, an increase would be likely except when the need demands.

“I prefer curfew over the lockdown due to the challenges related to food sharing. The attitude of the people coming to collect food can also create scenes to intensify the spread. If technical men call for a lockdown, I’ll deem it as best due but I rather prefer a curfew,” she ended.
