Liverpool’s youngest team were eliminated from the Carabao Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp and the entire first team of the Reds are on participating in the FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar and will take on Monterrey in the semi-final leg of the tournament on Wednesday night.

An average age of 19 years, six-months and three days were guided by Under-23 coach Neil Critchley to steer the Reds at the Villa Park to decide their fate on a semifinal qualification.

First half goals from Conor Hourihane, an own goal from Morgan Boyes, two for Jonathan Kodjia and a late second-half strike from Wesley granted the home side the win over the Liverpool team.

Impressive performance from 16-year old Harvey Elliot against the Villa defense was a joy to watch.

According to Neil Critchley, the boys gave up their best and played like a Liverpool team with the supporters appreciative after the end of the game

“I thought the start to the game was brilliant and I think we were actually the better team for the first 12 or 13 minutes and then obviously we concede from a wide free-kick which we could’ve done a little bit better with,” he said in the post-match interview.

“And then the second one is a real cruel deflection and you find yourself 2-0 down scratching your head and thinking ‘I’m not sure how we are 2-0 down’.

“I don’t think we did too many things wrong in the game.

Critchley revealed Klopp’s half time message to the boys, which kept them composed better than the former half before a late strike from Wesley deep in the final minutes.

“We had some information at half-time from the manager - basically to keep playing the way we were playing, keep being brave, keep doing what we were doing. So he was out there watching with the staff and the players and I hope, and I’m sure he will be, he is proud of the way we played tonight,” he added.
